Year 3 Spelling Words for Australian Students

2 min read · Australian primary learning

Year 3 spelling is about more than learning longer lists. Children use their phonics knowledge alongside spelling patterns and meaningful word parts to tackle multisyllabic words, prefixes, suffixes and homophones.

A useful Year 3 list should therefore contain groups of related examples, not 50 random difficult words.

What spelling knowledge develops in Year 3?

Children encounter more complex consonant and vowel patterns and less common spellings, such as the different sounds represented by the letters ch in change, machine and school. They also learn to break longer words into syllables and meaningful parts.

Prefixes such as un-, re-, dis-, mis- and in- change a word's meaning. Suffixes such as -ful, -less and -ness build related words. Children also apply conventions when adding -ed and -ing, including doubling a consonant, dropping a final e or changing y to i.

Why children forget words after the test

Copying a word repeatedly can create short-term familiarity without helping a child understand how the word works. A child may remember it on Friday and lose it the following week because the practice was concentrated into one sitting.

A stronger routine is to identify the difficult part, connect the word with related words, use it in a sentence and retrieve it again after a delay. Mixing older and newer words also shows whether the spelling has been retained.

Practise meaning as well as letters

For homophones, the sentence matters. Ask whether their shows belonging or there refers to a place. For prefixed words, ask what the prefix contributes: disagree means not agreeing, while redo means doing something again.
